Great Basin Outdoor School is now offering our mentor program to all area high schools. A mentor has fun while supervising and leading activities with young children. They gain valuable leadership skills, sharpen their own environmental science concepts, gain knowledge of natural resource careers and earn community service credits, all while on the beautiful shores of Lake Tahoe.

Great Basin Outdoor School is now offering our mentor program to all area high schools. A mentor has fun while supervising and leading activities with young children. They gain valuable leadership skills, sharpen their own environmental science concepts, gain knowledge of natural resource careers and earn community service credits.
Since 1995 teens have lead 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students and their teachers in standards-based hands-on learning experiences in a residential camp setting. Mentors receive three hours of training on site during their week of attendance, and usually participate in a weekend training session before the season.
Your school support of the mentor program is very important. Schools provide a volunteer contact, a meeting place, may waive the 4 day absence, and may award .5 community service credit.
High school students are responsible for mentoring children at one 4-day session in the fall or spring. We strive to give more to the students than what we receive through their involvement at the outdoor school.
Mentors must be 16 years of age or older at the time of the program. We occasionally allow younger teens to participate, as "mentors in training" who work all week paired with an older mentor. Great Basin also occasionally utilizes high school graduates, college students, parents and family members as mentors.
