For Students
This page has information and ideas to help you stay connected to your Great Basin experience and learning.
Young Naturalist Awards
The American Museum of Natural History sponsors the Young Naturalist Awards, a cash prize and trip to New York for 7-12 grade students. Go on your own expedition! You can go on your own scientific expedition anywhere, whether you live in a big city or small town. You can look under a rock, up at the stars, or in your local city park. Begin by choosing a topic in biology, earth science, or astronomy. Plan an expedition that will provide new data, questions, specimens or observations on your topic. Then share your data and experiences. For more information and application, check http://www.amnh.org/youngnaturalistawards/.
Astronomy
To keep up with what's happening in the night sky, go the Sky and Telescope Magazine online, at http://www.skypub.com/sights/sights.shtml. Though you already realize that if you live in an urban area such as Reno, you can't see all that much at night, you can see the brightest stars, and the major planets, and the moon. Even just getting away from streetlights helps, so go to a local park (with an adult, or course) to see what's up there.
Also check out NASA's Space Kids site at http://spacekids.hq.nasa.gov/.
Schoolyard Habitat
Want to provide habitat for wildlife on your school grounds? Want to get out of the classroom and into the dirt? The National Wildlife Federation has a program that supports school in planning, building and maintaining habitats for wildlife. Check the website at http://www.nwf.org/schoolyardhabitats/. If teachers and parents want to visit schools that already have habitats to find out the logistics of a habitat and how it is integrated into the school curriculum, contact us and we'll put you in touch.
Projects With Other Schools
OnlineClass offers collaborative (working together) online projects, including several in science, at http://www.onlineclass.com/general/schedule.html. There are dozens of other online projects that let you work with schools from Nevada, the US, and the world. We'll add links for those in the future.
Writing & Art
River of Words is an environmental art and poetry program created to promote watershed awareness, literacy, and the arts. Through our annual art and poetry contest and our educator's tools, River of Words helps communities begin exploring the natural and cultural history of their own homegrounds.
Gardening
The Edible Schoolyard is a program at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley that integrates a garden, kitchen, and school lunches into the curriculum, transforming the school.
